What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is an advanced form of therapy that uses a computer to train the brain. The goal is to guide the brain to form healthier pathways. Call us today to see if it may help you or support your current therapy plan.

In 2010, I decided that my son, whom I adopted, was desperately in need of something different from talk therapy. He and I struggled to form a healthy attachment, but the past had affected his body AND brain. Severe neglect and trauma had played a part in having emotional extremes.

During a conference for people regarding the effects of trauma on children, I had a mother in the row behind me speak of hope. She shared that her adoptive son’s development in all areas- emotional, social, mental, and spiritual- had been impacted by neurofeedback.

Well- THAT”S IT!!! I went on a journey to learn about this neurofeedback thing and studied the who, what, when, where and why of it.

While neurofeedback is an advanced type of treatment, it has been around since the late 1960’s. It has been a woo, woo type of therapy- meaning people were skeptical. Now that science is looking more closely at the brain and so many different conditions, neurofeedback is finally gaining respect for peak performance, mental health, and physical health conditions.

In 2010, I did a search for clinics that offered neurofeedback in San Antonio. The options were limited, with a handful of providers. I started thinking- maybe I should get trained and do it myself- after all, the mother I talked with at the start of this article was very convincing.

When I went off for training in California at the EEG Institute, I learned quite a few things. The first was that there were a lot of neurofeedback providers in the country, but they were concentrated in California and the Northeast Coast. Texas was way behind in using this type of therapy. There appeared to be a trained provider on every other corner in California.

More training has been added since 2010. Some of the counseling programs at universities here in San Antonio started offering training programs. This has resulted in more providers that can now offer this treatment as an option for mental health and stress issues.

Positive outcomes and word of mouth have led to an increased number of people seeking neurofeedback in San Antonio.

3 Ways to find a provider:

  1. Do an internet search using the words neurofeedback
  2. Look on neurofeedback training session websites for a list of providers in your area
    1. Biofeedback Certification International Alliance (www.BCIA.org)
    2. EEG Info (www.eeginfo.com)
  3. Using word of mouth- look for specialty groups and ask if this is helpful and who is the provider. Ex: groups for PTSD trauma, post-adopted children, anxiety and depression

Who can benefit from neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback can be used for people of all ages to treat a variety of issues. The treatment has been most beneficial for people who need to have their brain calmed down- whether stressed, suffering anxiety or depression, as well as struggling with addiction, ADHD, chronic health conditions, or trauma.

Brain trauma is also an important issue- with the goal being to support the healing of the brain. In my son’s case, he had a significant amount of neglect and trauma by 3 ½ years old.

What can be accomplished with neurofeedback?

For many, the goal is to promote physical calming. For example, people with anger issues or anxiety tend to carry tension throughout the body. Others need some balance in their physical health.

Neurofeedback promotes support of the brain as it seeks to rebalance. Sleep is sometimes one of the best benefits of neurofeedback. For some others, muscle control can be impacted. For people with ADHD, the effect can be increased motivation or organization.

While these examples are being provided in this article, not everybody experiences the same effect or changes they seek. Length of time (not a few weeks but perhaps across 2-12 months)., number of sessions (1-2 times per week), and good feedback from the client are factors in helping the brain respond and make changes.
